Mary Mary

Tucked in the former St Mary’s Hospital building in Salamanca Place is Mary Mary, a cocktail bar offering dark, cosy vibes. Its drinks menu is stacked with Tasmanian spirits and unique cocktails – try the True Local, an apple brandy and vermouth concoction that’s a real nod to the Apple Isle. Head here for a pre or post-dinner beverage on a date night, or you could just stay and order oysters, crostini, salumi or another plate from the small bites menu. One of North Hobart’s newer dining options, Trophy Room launched with breakfast and lunch service that proved instantly popular. So much so, the restaurant has branched out into adding Friday night dinner – the perfect date idea for a Hobart rendezvous. The small space offers several tables for two, making it perfect to chat over a bowl of fresh homemade pasta. Trophy Room takes lunch and dinner bookings but you can always roll the dice with a walk-in and hope for a spot!

Institut Polaire

Opposite to dark and cosy is Institut Polaire, a wine bar and restaurant which is as white and cool as it comes. An ode to Tasmania’s location as the gateway to Antarctica, the venue celebrates the colder side of life: cool climate wines, freshly-caught seafood from the freezing Southern Ocean and food incorporating alpine food traditions. The relatively small space filled with tables for two – not to mention Australia’s biggest wine list with 100+ drops – makes for a perfect date night experience. Book ahead if you want to try the set menu, or if you’re happy for a la carte, walk-ins are welcome.

Ogee

Matt Breen, the brains (and chef) behind Sonny, opened Euro-inspired bistro Ogee in 2023. Like his former restaurant, this North Hobart space is small and intimate with just 28 seats, and is probably the first date idea most Hobart couples have when choosing a venue. With a delicious pasta-heavy menu, lots of Italian and French wines on the list, a great vibe and plenty of tables for two, it’s the perfect date night spot. It’s open Thursday - Sunday and while there’s a small amount of bookings available, walk-ins are preferred.

Landscape

Located inside the Henry Jones Art Hotel is the dark, ambient Landscape, a premium dining experience that feels like a restaurant crossed with an art museum, with walls lined with pieces by John Glover. Art lovers will get a kick out of going on a date with an original landscape artwork joining as a third wheel – you’ll never run out of conversation as you gaze at the incredible representations of Tasmania’s wild, stunning beauty on the wall next to you. And the food here is also top-notch, with most of the produce sourced from Tasmanian farmers. It truly is one of the most romantic restaurants in Hobart.

Lucinda

Lucinda is another intimate wine bar that is a favourite with locals – you’ll see many a date night happening if you happen to stroll past while it’s open (Wednesday to Saturday from 4pm). Small and with an extensive wine list, Lucinda is a great pre-dinner option, especially if you’re heading to its sister restaurant Dier Makr afterwards. However, Lucinda does have some scrumptious small plates on the menu, so if you’re lucky enough to nab a table, order up and settle in for a cosy night with your other half.

The sister restaurant to Lucinda is situated in the same grey building, and has the same owner-chef, Kobi Ruzicka. The menu, which like others on this list is both inspired by and heavily incorporates local produce, is unique and ever-changing. The restaurant’s space is small and intimate – and there’s a huge wine cellar in one corner where the perfect pairing for your meal can be found. Treat yourself to the set menu on Thursday – Sunday and your tastebuds will fall in love.

Pitzi

A newcomer to Hobart’s foodie scene, Pitzi is owned by the same folks as Fico, one of the city’s most celebrated restaurants. And it looks like Pitzi might go the same way as its older sibling – it only opened in January 2024 and is already proving to be popular with locals. Cheerful and welcoming, it’s a great spot for a date because it’s still small and intimate, despite the relaxed atmosphere. Dedicated to all things pasta, the menu is full of Italian-inspired dishes with local flair… sea urchin spaghetti, anyone?
